Valérie Declerck was born in Nemours (France) in 1980. During her undergraduate education at the Institute of Technology in Le Mans, she trained with Professor J. Lebreton at the University of Nantes in 2000. She then moved to the University of Montpellier II where she obtained her DEA in 2003 and her Ph.D. degree in 2006 under the direction of Dr F. Lamaty where she worked on the the aza-Baylis–Hillman reaction and its applications in heterocyclic chemistry, and also on solid state peptide synthesis. Late 2006, she joined the group of Professor J. H. Rigby at Wayne State University (Detroit, MI, USA) as a postdoctoral fellow to work on the total synthesis of Schelhammeridine and related alkaloids. She then spent an additional postdoctoral year in the group of Professors G. Guillaumet and S. Routier at University of Orléans working on the synthesis central nervous system diseases drugs in collaboration with UCB-Pharma. In September 2008 she was appointed Maître de Conférences at the IUT of Orsay – University Paris-Sud 11 (Orsay, France) and she joined the group of Professor D. J. Aitken at the Institut de Chimie Moléculaire et des Matériaux d’Orsay (ICMMO) where she works on the synthesis of constrained β-amino acids, synthesis and conformational study of their oligomers, and their use as organocatalysts.
