Gérard Rousseau was born in Versailles (France), studied at Orsay University, where he obtained his PhD in 1977 under the direction of professor Conia on the reactivity of singlet oxygen with cyclopropanic compounds. After one year spent at Harvard with Professor R. B. Woodward (1978) he returned to Orsay and took a position at CNRS and started his independent research activity. There, his main research fields were the chemistry of ketene acetals, utilization of enzymes in organic synthesis, and, more recently, the preparation of medium-ring compounds. He is presently director of research. His main research interest is currently in the preparation of small- and largering heterocyclic compounds by electrophilic cyclization.
