The electronic properties of functionalized Fe(II) complexes are controlled by light. When illuminated, the compounds dispersed in polymeric films show the features typical for Z/E isomerizations of the organic moiety and photomagnetism of the inorganic moiety. This ligand-driven light-induced spin change activity has been discussed from a X-ray structural analysis. In the crystal, the Z-to-E isomerization of stilbenoids occurs via a visible excitation of the S=2 Fe(II) complex leading to a spin-crossover type photoproduct.
