Curved conjufated aromatics: C60 analogues

Vincent Huc
Cyril Martini

The discovery of C60 in 1985 opened a new avenue of research in the fields of chemistry and physics. It was demonstrated later on that all the fascinating electronic/chemical properties of C60 and C60-based materials are related to the curvature of the constituting carbon sheet. Indeed, the bonding between the carbon atoms, intermediate between graphite (sp2 hybridized) and diamond (sp3 hybridized) mas given the name of « mixed hybridization ». Considering the importance of this « mixed hybridization » phenomenon, we’re generalizing this effect threw the synthesis of conjugated molecular belts, using Calixarenes as starting compounds.
