Valérie Declerck studied chemistry in Le Mans and then Montpellier where she worked on the preparation of β-amino acids by aza-Baylis–Hillman reaction and their applications in heterocyclic chemistry, and also on solid state peptide synthesis using UNCAs under the supervision of Dr F. Lamaty to obtain a DEA in Chemistry with a major in Biomolecules in 2003 and a PhD degree in 2006. Late 2006, she joined the group of Pr J. H. Rigby at Wayne State University (Detroit, MI, USA) as a post-doctoral research associate to work on the total synthesis of Schelhammeridine and related alkaloids. She then spent an additional post-doctoral year in the group of Pr G. Guillaumet and Pr S. Routier at University of Orléans to work on the synthesis of central nervous system diseases drugs in collaboration with the pharmaceutical company UCB-Pharma. In 2008 she was appointed Maître de Conférences at the Institute of Technology of the University of Paris–Sud (Orsay, France) and she joined the research group of Pr D. J. Aitken at the Institut de Chimie Moléculaire et des Matériaux d’Orsay (ICMMO) where she studies the synthesis of cyclobutane β-amino acids and hydrazino acids as new building-blocks for the construction of helical foldamers and bioactive peptides. Early 2015 she obtained her Habilitation from the University of Paris–Sud.
